Dawn lent over and nudged Nick awake. They both leaned over to look out of the window as they flew over.
Palm trees swayed in the wind, and the turquoise blue of the ocean lapped at the sand of the beach, a dazzling white that even from this height seemed to dazzle the eyes.Slowly mud huts and little plots of vegetation took over from the sand, corrugated roofs appeared shimmering in the heat. As they flew in lower, villages appeared and traffic could be seen. Spirals of woodsmoke lazily drifted up into the sky.
The plane banked steeply and there was the tarmac of the runway underneath them. With a skid and a bump they landed.
They quickly cleared customs and immigration and then were outside. Dawn looked anxiously around for their transport. The safari park had said they would send a car to pick them up. Spying a placard held up with their names on it by an african in a uniform, they waved and walked over.
"Jambo, Jambo, I am Samson, your driver." He led them outside to the small car park, weaving in and out of the throng of people who seemed to mill around. Samson deftly stored the cases in the back of the dusty looking land rover and saw them into the vehicle. With a wave to a passing man, they sped off and were soon out of the small township
Bouncing along the dirt road, dust billowing out behind them. They both eagerly watched the countryside rush past the car window. Bicycles laden up with baskets, and even the odd bedstead, topped with an armchair wobbled at the roadside. Children waved and called out. Chickens dashed across the road, a few feathers flying in their haste to get over. Several times they swerved to miss the odd dog and goat. Driving was certainly chaotic over here, Dawn was thankful they had a driver who seemed to know what he was doing!
Flowering trees and palms whizzed passed, and small cultivated plots as they made their way to the camp.
Both Dawn and Nick busily watched out of the windows, which they kept open on the hope they would feel a little cooler, but no, the stifling heat and dust seemed to get into every part of them. But there was so much to see.
Slowing down they came to some large gates, with a mass of flowering trees either side of the short driveway, and they could see the camp ahead of them.
Showers and a cold drink after checking in was the first thing that came to mind. Then a stroll around to have a look at the camp, which thankfully was not as primitive as Dawn thought it would be. They even had on- suit facilities, a little basic, but at least they did not have to share with others in the camp. This was going to be a great holiday.
To be continued.
